Skimming

Float And Set
Float and set is the two-stage method used where there is no plaster at all — bare brick, block, or walls hacked back after damp work. We apply a backing coat first, usually browning on standard masonry or bonding on dense, low-suction blockwork and then skim over for a smooth finish.

For larger projects such as extensions, new house builds, full replasters or rendering, we prefer to visit and assess the substrate, moisture levels and access in person. That visit is also free, and it gives us the detail needed to plan the work properly.
A skim over existing plaster in an average size room usually takes one day, sometimes two if the ceiling is included.
Plastering back to brick or fitting plasterboard first extends this to two or three days, depending on room size.
Drying times are separate from working times. Fresh plaster typically needs three to seven days before painting, longer in cold or humid conditions or where thicker coats have been applied. We will tell you when the surface is ready for decoration.
Repair and preparation are part of the job, not an extra. We remove blown or hollow plaster, cut out cracks and make good the background before any finish coat is applied.
